Bike Fit Basics – Lever Tilt.

Lever tilt affects shoulder rotation, hand pressure, joint comfort in the arm and influences further up the chain.

A modern STI provides multiple hand positions depending on a rider’s preference and style.

The angle of the lever unit can have a dramatic effect on not only hand pressure distribution, but shoulder rotation, neck tension and ultimately stability.

A balance should be struck to allow a rider to use all available hand positions comfortably, have good access to the brake lever while using the drops and to retain a stable grip when standing on steep inclines.

A common adjustment for amateur riders is to tilt the bar and lever unit both aggressively upwards, often in an attempt to make up for excessive bar drop, reach or poor handlebar choice and setup, only to find the drops are now less accessible than ever!

Modern STIs provide a wider range of practical angle adjustment than previously possible, thanks to the ease with which the lever reach can be dialled in, especially when paired with a modern compact bar.
