An important consideration when choosing a saddle is the overall width.
Whilst manufacturers have worked to make this decision easier, sitting on a gel pack or cardboard bench, or pelvic calipers only tell a relatively unimportant part of the story when transitioning this data over to a riding position.
Our “Sit Bone Width” is not a single measurement, especially considering that we actually sit on our pubic rami. In fact, the more upright one rolls their pelvis, the wider this contact patch becomes and the reverse as we rotate forward.
Once again, it is important to consider the desired position of the rider before making a final saddle choice. Two identical riders may find better pressure distribution from different saddles, dependant on how ‘aggressive’ their position and the degree of pelvic rotation.
