My journey towards Bike Fitting began through my own recovery, after I was diagnosed with a progressive Scoliosis in my late teens. A student at the time, I researched all available material in to my condition, to better understand the underlying causes and possible treatments. I committed to a strength and conditioning program ahead of my surgery to aid my recovery in any way possible. In the summer of 2011 I underwent a posterior instrumented spinal fusion, to partially straighten and fuse the majority of my thoracic spine.
During my recovery, I continued to learn all I could about anatomy and the nervous system, in particular it’s relationship to the bike, so that I could accelerate my return to riding as quickly and safely as possible.
Two years later I returned to racing mountain bikes. Focusing on the marathon type events which I felt best suited me, I competed for local teams over the next few seasons in 12 and 24 hour races both solo and as part of team relays.
Having been working following my graduation as an industrial model maker, I also began working part-time at a local bike shop. This soon moved in to a full-time role as I grew the bike fitting practice in the store. With my own history and depth of research, combined with some out of the box thinking, I developed a reputation for finding solutions for ‘problem’ clients that standard bike fitting practices couldn’t address.
A few days a month I volunteer at the Olympic Velodrome as a tandem pilot, where I met my now close friend John, a partially-sighted cyclist, who I was glad to help transition to the road and continue to share many weekends riding with.
I continued to practice fitting in the shop for seven years, attaining multiple certifications for the store from Cyclefit and Bikefit along the way. I attended seminars for Bike Fitters across the country and was also the subject of a short film by Henry Cramer.
My own riding has continued to be a mixed bag! At the time of writing focused mostly toward Track and Time Trials, with other various events along the way, like Rad am Ring and the Roubaix Challenge. John and I even dragged an old steel touring tandem over Ditchling Beacon raising money for The Kent Blind Association riding London to Brighton.
Since 2019 I have practiced independently from the retail trade, continuing to study and improve what I can bring to my clients, under the guidance of some wonderful mentors from ex-professional riders, to neurologists and soft tissue specialists.
I am lucky enough to continue to work with a hugely eclectic mix of riders, from top-tier road racers and Ironman triathletes, to clients who came to me having sustained injuries which came close to ending their days of riding for good. In 2023, Kristy Howells made me extremely proud by becoming my first ever World Champion, winning the Sprint at World Masters!
